The ninja....

I think my family has been watching too much Kong-Fu Panda lately. My husband bought a few years ago, a sword. Not just any sword but a Katana (spelling?) which is a "Ninja" sword. I thought it was going to be for decor purposes but I was wrong.

We have discovered that not only when you give a grown man a "ninja" sword that he will instantly return to his childhood imagination and jump around the house going "HI-YA!" wielding a sword that he can still rationalize the point of owning a sword in this day and age.

- It is a means to defend his family from intruders. What burglar in his right mind would stick around if the person whose home he just broke into came at him with a sword. Such a sight would probably catch anyone off guard for that matter....
- It is for yard work. If the blade is sharp enough, it is a wonderful tool to trim the hedges with while making the other husbands jealous that their wives won't let them trim their hedges with a sword too.
- No one will mess with you at the bar. My husband thinks that its because the sword is intimidating; I think it is because people probably think that if someone carried a sword to a bar that they are probably a nut-job and that is why they don't talk to you.
- It confuses annoying family members away who come to visit.
- It can be used as a cooking utensil to chop watermelon, which by the way, does not explode like in the movies when hit with a sword but just slices in half.
-It can easily be stashed in the car in the case of an emergency and you need to scare off a hijacker.
- If you are to get lost in the woods, you can use it to hunt for food.
- It can be part of the home decor when not in use for other things.
- Its fun to jump around the house pretending to be a ninja with it, while "working on your sword fighting skills".....

Last night my husband pulled out his ninja sword. Our kids went nuts and wanted to play with it so my husband kept it in its sheath and acted like he was a ninja wielding around his sword and yelling "hi-ya!" as I tried to get the kids settled down for bedtime.

This morning as we were getting out of the car to go inside the sitter's house my daughter made what she felt was a factual observation to her brother- "We have to go to Ms. Lyn's because mommy has to go to work and daddy's has to sleep from fighting bad guys last night"....
